Albania is "armoured" against bird flu and "blue tongue" - Ministry of Agriculture bans imports from 16 European countries
Albania risks being affected by another bird flu epidemic, because this disease is affecting a large part of European countries. For this reason, measures are being taken to prevent the possible infection of birds in our country.
The Ministry of Agriculture, through special orders, has taken protective measures against the avian influenza disease with high pathogenicity of birds, which appeared in the state of Bulgaria; Italy; Poland, Hungary; Slovakia; the Czech Republic; Sweden.
The measures include the ban on the import and transit through the territory of the Republic of Albania of: live poultry; 24-hour birds; decorative birds; biological material of birds; poultry eggs; poultry meat not thermally treated; non-thermally treated poultry by-products.
The poultry breeding and egg production sector took a big hit in 2022 from the avian influenza disease, otherwise known as bird flu where more than 250 thousand heads were culled and the establishments went almost to zero. And after the start of the recovery, the country's bird flu would be fatal for the industry.
According to data from INSTAT, in 2023 the number of chickens in Albania is recorded at 4.8 million heads and the number of eggs at 894 million grains.
Also, at the same time, the Ministry of Agriculture has taken measures to protect against the disease of sheep and goat pox that appeared in Greece, Turkey, and Bulgaria. And in this case, the measures include the ban on the import and transit to the territory of the Republic of Albania of all live animals of the plant and wool type, biological material and animal by-products of the plant and wool type.
Similar measures have been taken to protect against the blue tongue disease that has appeared in Sweden, Denmark, Portugal, Austria, the Netherlands and Spain.
