Fallen roofs, broken plaster or broken walls. There are more and more abandoned houses in the country as a result of the mass emigration that took place over the years both abroad and within the country.
Here we consider only the ordinary dwellings that are mainly found in the rural areas of the country, where emigration is more pronounced.
According to data from the Census for 2023, there are about 148,000 uninhabited houses in the country.
Against the total, these houses occupy about 29% of the total. On the other hand, what else stands out from the Census data is that families with 2 members are the ones that mostly live in ordinary houses.
In other words, they are elderly couples who stay in their homes in the countryside, because their children leave the country.
Older houses that were built between 1919 and 1960 are increasingly losing habitability. According to data from INSTAT, about 60 thousand of them are inhabited.
The government, through stimulus packages, intends to bring back to the country the displaced individuals, a good part of whom are on the verge of retirement, and to return to invest in their land.
