Albania-USA, partnership in the field of defense is strengthened - Minister Vëngu: Priority, development of capacities and modernization of the army
The Minister of Defense, Pirro Vëngu, held a meeting in the US with the Undersecretary of Defense for Policy, Amanda Dory. The discussions focused on key issues for security and cooperation in the field of defense between the USA and Albania in function of the NATO agenda.
Minister Vëngu emphasized that in the context where the Albanian Government is dedicating the most significant budget of the last two decades to Defense and security, it is important to coordinate actions with the strategic ally the United States of America for modernization, capacity development, missions, cyber protection, and security dynamics in the Balkan region.
In this meeting, the financing from the American side was also discussed, for a comprehensive modernization of the defense capacities of our armed forces, connecting it with the priority of the Albanian government for the revival of the military industry.
Meanwhile, 54.8% of the budget of the Ministry of Defense for 2025 goes to the modernization and increase of operational readiness. Investments are in several directions; in the renovation of military bases, the construction of new bases, investments in technology and especially investments in human strength.
Albania has significantly increased investments in the defense sector, where for the first time this year funds have been allocated that reach the level of 2.01% of the Gross Domestic Product.
The projections are that this increase will be annual, where within 10 years it is intended to reach the level of 2.8% of the Gross Domestic Product.
The plan is that within a few years Albania will have an army and defense system similar to that of NATO and that responds to any challenge that may arise for the national security of our country.
