Snow has begun to fall in parts of Central Europe, while a front of cold polar air is sweeping across the continent.

In Belgium, Tuesday's heavy rain and strong winds turned freezing, forming a layer of snow on the peaks near Signal de Botrange.

Belgium's Royal Meteorological Institute has issued a yellow warning for ice and snow in the provinces of Hainaut, Liège, Luxembourg and Namur as temperatures drop to around or below zero degrees.

Snowfall is also expected on the peaks of the Ardennes, although the snow cover will remain light.

In Austria, truck drivers on the Arlberg Pass were forced to put snow chains on their vehicles until late Wednesday morning as roads remained icy after overnight snowfall.

Drivers in Poland were also advised to put on their winter tires after a storm front brought snowfall to the southern and northwestern regions of the country.

Heavy snow in the Tatra Mountains prompted warnings from rescue teams to avoid hiking on tourist routes after a potential third-degree avalanche alert was issued.

Meteorologists say temperatures could drop in the Tatras to 10-15 degrees below zero overnight over the coming weekend.

Temperatures in the Czech Republic fell to 10 degrees overnight on Wednesday as precipitation turned to snow at altitudes above 400 metres.

The Czech Hydrometeorological Institute says up to 12 centimeters of snow could fall in the east of the country on Thursday and Friday and there is a risk of icy conditions in northwest and northern Bohemia.

Meanwhile in Denmark, snowfall led to slippery roads, causing a truck crash on the highway between the cities of Nyborg and Odense.
