65.5 million euros of assets are seized and confiscated - From properties, trading shares and even cryptocurrencies
In the continuation of the fight against corruption and organized crime, the Special Prosecution Office has managed to seize and confiscate during 2024 a diversified portfolio of assets, including real estate, monetary values, trading quotas and cryptocurrency portfolios with a total value of approximately 65.5 million euros.
According to official data, compared to 2023, where the total value of seized and confiscated assets was around 41 million euros, this year results in an increase of around 59.7%.
Of which the value of seized assets amounts to around 28.7 million euros or around 43.8% of the total value, while for confiscated assets this value amounts to around 36.8 million euros or around 56.2% of the total value.
Likewise, compared to 2023, an increase of about 34% is noted in the number of proceedings registered under the criminal offense "Laundering of proceeds of crime or criminal activity", from 35 proceedings in 2023 to 47 proceedings in 2024.
The Special Prosecution Office has assessed as a necessity the strengthening of the professional capacities of prosecutors through training with a focus on the fight against corruption and especially financial investigations.
The Special Structure against Corruption and Organized Crime has been positively evaluated in the fight against money laundering and its contribution has been assessed as a key factor in Albania's removal from the list of countries under enhanced monitoring or, as it is otherwise called, from the "grey list".
During 2024, the implementation of measures aimed at fulfilling MONEYVAL's recommendations has been one of the main objectives of the Special Prosecution Office, which has continuously reported on the progress of their implementation in close cooperation with the Financial Intelligence Agency.
The Special Prosecution Office, for each category of criminal offenses within its jurisdiction, continues to conduct a parallel financial and property investigation, which results in the sequestration and confiscation of the assets of the perpetrators of criminal offenses.
