The competition for the seasonal airport of Gjirokastra opens soon/ What

Gjirokastra is coming back into the spotlight as a point with real potential for the development of civil aviation in the south of the country. Ranked as one of the most beautiful cities, Gjirokastra is increasingly striving to increase its assets that could make it a real tourist attraction. The Gjirokastra Aerodrome is one of those assets that the people of Gjirokastra are not only proud of, but expect to be revived as soon as possible. Prime Minister Edi Rama declared the day before that Albania must continue expanding its civil aviation system to respond to the increase in the number of passengers and flights in the coming years.

"The government is in the final phase of preparations for opening the competition for Gjirokastra Airport, which will function as a tourist and seasonal airport," said Rama.

The news of the opening of the competition for the Gjirokastra tourist airport has been described as a positive step by the mayor of Gjirokastra, Flamur Golemi. Speaking to SCAN TV, Golemi said that the airport will be an important point that will bring economic development and more employment, as Gjirokastra is considered one of the most important centers of year-round tourism.

"Gjirokastra Airport should no longer be a field aerodrome, but an aerodrome with all capacities and standards. Not only the city, but the entire Gjirokastra region deserves it, because it will be an airport serving the entire area. Of course, the direct impact will be in Gjirokastra, and this is positive news. The runway currently runs 1.2 km, it is a field aerodrome. We have generally used it for sports flights, but we now expect it to be an airport with standards" - says Flamur Golemi, mayor of Gjirokastra.

Meanwhile, Teodor Bilushi, Honorary Consul of Italy in Gjirokastra, emphasizes that direct flights from Italy were realized with the implementation of customs and customs and police control in Gjirokastra during this year and also in 2025.

"As part of the revitalization of the Gjirokastra aerodrome, a twinning agreement with the airport of Sibari, Italy, was signed in 2025," says Bilushi.

Built in 1924, today the Gjirokastra Airport is waiting to finalize this project that will serve the stone city for its geographical position, tourist potential, but also for access to movement. Currently, the infrastructure requires concrete investments, starting from maintenance, the complete enclosure of the runway, its marking according to air safety criteria. However, the fact that this space has previously hosted air activities shows that it has proven potential and can easily be returned to seasonal tourist use. If the investments are realized, it could become a key point for tourist flights, charters or other air services, giving another impulse to the economic development of the entire southern region.
