How much does luxury vehicles cost Albanians? - 5.7 million euros in taxes for new registrations and existing cars
Despite the high obligations they have to bear, both in taxes and fuel costs, Albanians have a growing tendency to prefer luxury vehicles.
Official data from the General Directorate of Taxes, processed by SCAN TV, show that throughout 2023, citizens paid nearly 1.8 million euros in initial registration taxes for luxury vehicles, while in 2024 this figure increased to 2.4 million euros.
Compared to a year ago, an increase of 33.3 percent is recorded, which also indicates the increase in the number of luxury vehicles in the country, given that it is a fee that is paid only at the moment of their registration.
On the other hand, the annual tax on luxury vehicles has also increased by 13.7 percent, making luxury cost these individuals approximately 3.3 million euros.
A luxury vehicle is considered a vehicle up to 6+1, which meets at least one of the following conditions: Cylinder capacity equal to or greater than 3000 cm3; or Value/price equal to or greater than 5 million lekë.
The value of the vehicle is calculated as the value when the vehicle is first registered and/or whenever its ownership changes. The value of the vehicle, for the purpose of the “Luxury Vehicle” classification, is reduced annually by 10% of the remaining value.
The registration fee for a luxury vehicle is 70,000 lek, which is paid at the time of registration. The annual tax for luxury vehicles is 21,000 lek.
This year, the General Directorate of Taxation has launched a pilot project with the General Directorate of Road Transport Services of Albania to compare individuals who own luxury cars with their personal income declaration (DIVA) as the first phase of this project and in the future to expand the exchange of information regarding other taxpayer assets.
