How effective are public policies and funds for women? - Report on the

The effectiveness of public policies and funds in the socio-economic empowerment of women in Albania was the focus of the roundtable discussion that brought together experts in the field and beyond.

The Deputy Ambassador of Sweden and Head of the Development Cooperation Office, who was present, stated that cooperation will increase on the common principle between Sweden and Albania on the economic and social empowerment of women.

“We have not come here just to reaffirm our joint commitment to this policy, but to emphasize once again a common principle between Sweden and Albania, which is the economic and social empowerment of women. Gender equality is the essential element, the main element of cooperation between Sweden and Albania over the past 30 years. And during these years we have seen extraordinary progress involving institutional partners and civil society organizations. The economic and social chain of women in society is not only a matter of justice but is a pressing issue in our society. All over the world we are noticing a serious opposition to gender equality and inclusion in society. There are many rights that are being questioned and unfortunately are taking steps backwards. And no country is immune to this opposition. Voices that represent gender equality are being silenced and women who have been active in society all over the world are facing great intimidation and opposition. However, we are seeing that private institutions and civil society are work with each other. This is exactly the area where we can see real results. In Albania, the law on gender equality is prepared and has been under discussion for a long time. And the parliament is expected to make a decision on Thursday, and this law is extremely important for clarifying institutional responsibilities.”

Commissioner for Protection from Discrimination, Robert Gajda, focused on two delicate moments of women who encounter problems related to employment.

"I connect it to the moments of pregnancy and motherhood. In a large part of the issues that we have dealt with gender aspects. We have mainly noticed that there is a satisfactory sensitivity of employers' knowledge of gender protection and the guarantees that a woman should have at the time of pregnancy, but we find an insensitivity and lack of understanding on the part of employers. Especially when it comes to the period of motherhood."

Some of the findings of the Together for Life organization are that the risk of poverty is higher among women compared to men, reflecting the need for more effective and targeted measures, the inclusion of women and girls in decision-making processes in rural areas is limited, the funds allocated for gender budgeting are negligible compared to European standards, etc.
