Energy consumption in water supply systems is increasing - WRA: Each company must draft specific studies on efficiency
Energy efficiency in the water supply and sewerage sector has suffered a slight deterioration in 2024, compared to the previous year. Data published by the Water Regulatory Authority shows that the average is 0.66 kWh/m³, increasing by 0.03 kWh/m³ compared to 2023.
This development is worrying, considering that electricity costs account for about 23% of the operating and maintenance costs in the utility sector, while 12 out of 17 utilities fail to cover these costs. This leads companies to rely on government subsidies or delay payments to the Electricity Distribution Operator, accumulating significant debts.
The data shows that 8 regional companies have consumption above the sector average. The most problematic is the Durrës Regional Company, with 1.44 kWh/m³, followed by Fier with 1.34 kWh/m³ and Lezha with 1.2 kWh/m³. According to the WRA, the high energy consumption is related to the use of pumps due to the remoteness of water sources and significant losses in the network.
On the other hand, companies that are mainly supplied with free flow have recorded the best performance. Dibra and Korça have maintained the same level of energy efficiency indicator, while the companies: Lezhë, Fier, Saranda and Pogradec have experienced deterioration. Meanwhile, Elbasan and Berat have reported a slight improvement, while Vora has recorded the largest decrease, with -0.14 kWh/m³.
Based on this data, the Water Regulatory Authority emphasizes that each company should draft specific studies on energy efficiency, analyzing energy use in pumping stations, wastewater treatment, reducing network losses, etc.
