“Reform of the Agency for Forests and Protected Areas” - Rama: Drones, nurseries and AI against fires

Prime Minister Edi Rama participated in the "For you, nature" activity, where he emphasized the importance of a unique management model for forests and protected areas, as a way to bring sustainable development in the field of the environment, based on the best European experiences.
"Overall, protected areas and nature territories were under constant aggression from illegal constructions and pollution, and I am glad that today the balance speaks of a significant reduction in environmental crimes, for a significant control of the territory in terms of environmental protection from the aggression of illegal constructions, but also for a significant limitation of pollution. None of these elements has yet been eliminated as problematic and in the entirety of these elements, what constitutes a necessary point to ensure a successful progress in this process related to the accession negotiations, but also directly to the future, is a much better and safer management of forests. Precisely for this reason, with the Minister of Environment, we are engaged in a process of reforming the forest and nature management model as a whole, a reform that must begin with a restructuring of the national agency for protected areas and forests, bringing them together and creating a synergy between the two in order to "There should be an agency that deals 360 degrees with protected forest areas," said Rama.
The head of government also spoke about the forest fire situation, for which he said that new financial resources will be committed to technologies such as drones, the expansion of nurseries, and the use of AI for more efficient management.
"We are facing a great challenge, during the summer season, when temperatures rise a lot, the big problem of fires, The need to intervene with more courage in terms of reform and attention regarding forests, is greater every year. The need to increase our capacities for afforestation is greater. We are also engaging new financial resources, to introduce technology, with drones, that bring precision, efficiency, are budgeted for the coming year. By building a base, we will increase both the financing and the intensity of afforestation.
Another necessity that this time has brought is the necessity to expand the capacity of public nurseries, by cooperating with municipalities, but also by supporting the new national agency for protected forest areas, to create its own fund and its own network of nurseries. In this regard, we have also intervened legally to bring an innovation that has just entered into force with the obligation of those who build to contribute to this green fund according to the square meters they build. Another necessary element is the empowerment with technology also in terms of seedling production. There are new opportunities today in this regard and the plan of the Ministry of Environment is to use these opportunities, including the immense opportunity of putting AI into use. " , said Rama.
Rama emphasized that environmental protection is one of the key elements in Albania's European journey.
