Government approves criminal amnesty - 447 people are immediately released from prison. Sentences reduced for 853 convicts
At today's meeting, the Council of Ministers approved the draft law on criminal amnesty, which provides for the immediate release from prison of 447 people and the reduction of sentences for 853 others.
According to the Minister of Justice, Besfort Lamallari, starting in 2024, criminal prosecution for a full 14,000 proceedings for minor offenses will be discontinued.
"In addition to a clear humanitarian act and a second chance for rehabilitation and reintegration, this is a concrete step that reduces the pressure of prison population and focuses justice where the social danger is real. This is not about tolerance for crime, but about a measured approach that aims at reintegration and more efficient use of criminal justice as we work to reduce the unnecessary use of pre-trial detention, in line with the legitimate concerns raised by the Council of Europe and European standards ," said Minister Lamallari.
After being submitted to the Assembly, the draft law will be reviewed in parliamentary committees and then passed for approval in a plenary session.
