Foreigners, a threat to local employment? According to SecuriMeter, 41% of Albanians feel threatened by foreign workers

In recent years, the Western Balkans region has also seen an increased presence of foreigners, mainly for employment reasons, but also for other purposes in our countries. According to SecuriMeter data, citizens' concern is related to the idea that foreign workers could increase unemployment among the local population. Albania has also not escaped these perceptions.
This view is most widespread in North Macedonia (47.1%), followed by Serbia (44.6%), Kosovo (42.5%) and Albania (41.4%). The figures show a common regional feeling that immigration can pose a risk to job security. Montenegro (39.8%) is close to this trend, while Bosnia and Herzegovina (30%) stands out as an exception, with significantly lower agreement.
The survey results show that the Western Balkans remain divided on immigration policies, with a strong preference for strict controls. The majority of respondents (62.6%) support strict limits on the number of foreign workers, while a significant share (56.5%) agree that foreign workers should only be allowed to work if there are jobs available, often calling for clear regulations on the issue.
Another concern is youth unemployment, which some link to the presence of foreign workers. There is a fear that online content could negatively affect young people. In Albania, this concern increased from 2024 to 2025: the percentage of respondents who agree that such content can radicalize young people increased from 35.4% to 48.8%.
The SecuriMeter 2025 survey is a regional public opinion report that examines the perception of citizens of six Western Balkan countries on security and socio-economic challenges in their daily lives.
