Summer holidays "ignite" consumption - Record imports of fuel, beer and coffee
The summer season has increased the interest of Albanian and foreign citizens to explore Albania, bringing a record increase in fuel consumption.
Oil and gasoline have recorded the highest growth among other imported excise goods in the first 7 months of the year.
According to official data from the Ministry of Finance, approximately 416 thousand tons of fuel have been cleared and consumed by July 2025. Compared to January-July 2024, imports of this product have increased by 49.4 thousand tons.
This is a record level even in recent years, mainly influenced by tourism and the decline in the price of oil in the market. Currently, a liter of oil sells for an average of 175 lekë, which has encouraged greater mobility of citizens for both short and long vacations.
The increase in fuel consumption is closely related to the increase in visits to mountainous and coastal tourist areas, but also to the more frequent use of vehicles.
Oil, as one of the main products that affects the economic chain of goods and services, signals increased domestic demand and economic growth.
Meanwhile, another product that has seen growth is beer. In the first 7 months of this year alone, 34 thousand tons of beer were imported, up from 32.2 thousand tons imported in January-July 2024. This shows that consumption is increasing, especially during the summer months, also due to the increase in accommodation structures that offer all-inclusive service in Albania.
But in addition to the role that tourism plays in the import of this product, the purchase of significant quantities from abroad has also been favored by the unification of excise duty for domestic production, which has brought a disadvantage to factories operating in Albania, which are facing high costs and numerous difficulties, but on the other hand has created more ground for importers.
Coffee imports have also increased, with 5,593 tons imported in the first 7 months of the year, an increase of 370 tons compared to the previous year.
Among excise goods, only the import of cigarettes has decreased, by 79 tons, where in 7 months 1,711 tons were imported from 1,790 tons in January-July 2024. The decline in the import of this product is probably a reflection of lower demand, also due to rising cigarette prices, a policy aimed at discouraging.
Revenues from excise duties, in the first half of the year, amounted to 390 million euros, with an increase of 41 million euros.
