Wind potential, still untapped - Electricity / Albania, without wind turbines in production

Wind potential, still untapped - Electricity / Albania, without wind turbines in

While solar energy has begun to bear fruit, accounting for about 6% of the total energy generated in the country, wind energy still remains an untapped asset in our country. Currently, there are only two companies that hold a license for wind energy production, but no plant has been built yet. 4 years ago, the Energy Regulatory Authority completed a long monitoring process that led to the revocation of four wind energy production licenses, granted since 2008, which were never accompanied by the construction of the respective plants.

Meanwhile, a small step was taken this year when for the first time ERE initiated the procedures for licensing a wind farm in Tragjas, in the Orikum area, with a capacity of 3 MW. Meanwhile, two other projects, namely “Park Eolik Pogradec” with 120 MW and “Park Eolik Drin-2” with 28.5 MW, have received a preliminary opinion to be connected to the transmission network.

In parallel, a project for a wind farm in Tropoja is being developed. It was approved by the Strategic Investment Committee at the end of 2023 and includes the construction of a combined wind and photovoltaic park, with a total capacity of 826 MW. The wind power park is planned to have a capacity of 636 MW.

Studies to date show that our country has favorable conditions for the development of wind energy. These studies and suitability maps show that the greatest potential for wind farms is located in the northeast, in Kukës, Tropoja and Puka; in the southeast in Kolonjë, Korçë and Devoll; and in the south, in Gjirokastër, Tepelena and Dropull. These are areas with considerable altitude, open relief and high average wind speed, elements that make wind energy production more sustainable.
