"In December, the negotiations for the 6th group chapter" - Hasani: The budget for foreign affairs is increased by 20%. The consular service is digitized
The year 2024 has been an important year for Albania, as it marked the opening of negotiations for the first chapter of European legislation. The Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs aims to hold the third intergovernmental conference by the end of this year for the opening of the sixth group of chapters related to foreign policy and by the end of 2025 to open all the group of chapters of the EU acquis.
In the Commission for European Affairs, Minister Igli Hasani gave details on the priorities of the draft budget 2025 related to the foreign service.
"This 3.8 billion lek budget is the largest in the history of the foreign service and will fund a number of key initiatives, including strong support for the operation of diplomatic and consular missions, as well as our commitment to regional initiatives and in the programs of the European Union, to conclude this opening of the group of chapters by the end of next year. Investments for 2025 include innovative projects, such as the modernization of the online consular service and the e-visa system that will improve services for Albanian citizens abroad. Likewise, support for the Albanian diaspora is a special priority."
Hasani also stopped the process of registering immigrants to vote in next year's elections.
"The creation of an online registration process, for all Albanians who wish to do so, and we have estimated an amount of 85 million ALL for this item. We have enabled, in cooperation with the Ministry of the Interior, to separate the application process for passports and identity cards and Albanian citizens, wherever they are, where this opportunity is offered, to be able to receive only one of the products, not to receive both both, in order to be prepared for their needs at any moment, but also with the goal, why not vote, with valid documents at the right moment."
Group chapter six on foreign policy is expected to be the easiest for Albania and the one that will be closed first, since 99% of Albania's foreign policy is aligned with the European Union.
