"Electric skateboards will not circulate temporarily" - Koçiu:

Starting tomorrow, Monday, the State Police will undertake an operation to ban the circulation of electric skateboards.

The news was announced by the Minister of Internal Affairs, Albana Koçiu, and the Director General of the State Police, Ilir Proda, who today made public the new rules for public safety regarding the use of electric skateboards.

Minister Koçiu stated that "we have received a number of complaints from citizens about the danger that these vehicles represent, especially for minors or the elderly who move on the roads, but also for their users themselves. State police data supports this growing problem."

"The use of these vehicles poses an immediate risk to public safety, it is enough to mention the fact that during 2024 alone, there were 991 cases reported by the emergency services for accidents involving these vehicles. Among these cases, there were also fatalities and serious injuries."

"To address this problem, we have also defined a standard procedure based on the State Police law to address this problem, by punishing the drivers of these vehicles and the use of these vehicles on urban roads, including sidewalks, up to and including the administrative blocking of these vehicles," said Proda.

Minister Koçiu emphasized that "today I have asked the state police to temporarily not allow the circulation of electric skateboards on the streets.

"I also want to inform all those who see skateboarding as a business model for daily rental, they should be clear not to invest in this activity. The permit, after the completion of this process, will always be valid only for personal use of these vehicles."

"We will draft clear and enforceable rules for everyone, clarifying once and for all which are the lanes, roads or spaces where skateboards can be used and where not, as well as the criteria for the age of use, protective measures such as helmets, lighting or permitted speed. Until a complete regulatory framework is drafted, public interest dictates an earlier intervention," the minister said.

Proda added that "as of Monday, the State Police will be involved in an operation to stop the circulation of these vehicles, therefore we ask for the understanding of citizens in this process."

The Minister concluded her speech by emphasizing that "Albania is not the only country facing this situation, France, Italy, Germany in the region, North Macedonia have taken drastic measures with permanent or partial lockdowns."

"We will analyze European best practices and take the necessary measures in the interest of all parties involved," said Koçiu.
