About 1 in 5 people buy online - Albania, the most "distrustful" in the region, prefers traditional shopping

E-commerce has significantly changed the way people shop around the world, according to a recent report from CEOWORLD magazine’s Global Digital 2025 Summary. The comprehensive report ranks countries based on the percentage of retail purchases made online, providing insight into current digital consumption trends. The United States stands out as the leader, with 47.54% of retail spending occurring online, followed by China, Japan, India, Hong Kong, and Singapore.
As for Albania, it ranks 110th, with about 26.5% of online purchases by locals. What is striking is that the countries of the region buy more online than Albania. The country in the region that reports the largest online purchases is Montenegro, which ranks 66th with 36% of online purchases. After Montenegro, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Serbia rank with 36% and 35.25% respectively. While North Macedonia holds the 80th place, where only 31.4% of the population buys online.
The report ranked countries based on various factors, including the amount of time individuals spend online each week, the percentage of people who shop online each month, and the average share of income spent online. Currently, there are 2.64 billion online shoppers globally, which accounts for over 33% of the world’s population. In terms of numbers, total e-commerce retail sales worldwide total approximately $6,310 billion, with the United States alone contributing $1,072.81 billion.
