France, Lecornu returns to head of government - President Macron re-appoints him

French President Emmanuel Macron has reappointed Sebastien Lecornu as prime minister, just days after the latter resigned. The decision angered Macron's fiercest political opponents, who vowed to topple the new government in a vote.

The French president hopes that Lecornu, a trusted ally, will be able to secure enough support in a deeply divided parliament to pass the 2026 budget. Faced with France's worst political crisis in decades, many of his political rivals have called on him to either call new parliamentary elections or resign.

The immediate reaction from the far right and left following Lecornu's reappointment was harsh, indicating that his second term as prime minister will not be any easier than his first, which lasted just 27 days and ended on Monday with his resignation.

"The Lecornu II government, appointed by Emmanuel Macron, who is more isolated and disconnected than ever from reality in the Élysée Palace, is a bad joke, a democratic shame and a humiliation for the French people," official sources of the National Rally said on the X network.

Lecornu's most urgent task will be to submit a draft budget to parliament by the end of Monday.

"I accept the mission entrusted to me by the President of the Republic to do everything possible for France to have a budget within this year and to address the daily problems of our citizens," Lecornu wrote in X.

He added that anyone joining his cabinet must give up any personal ambitions to succeed Macron in the 2027 presidential election, a race that has added to the instability of France's weak minority governments. Lecornu promised that his cabinet would "represent renewal and diversity."
