EU border system starts operations on October 12 - The new digital mechanism

Italy is ready to begin the gradual implementation of the European Entry-Exit System (EES) from October 12, 2025, according to the deadline set by the European Union for the activation of the new digital structure for non-EU citizens.

The Italian State Police announces that the first border checkpoints to use the new system will be the airports of Fiumicino and Malpensa, as well as the seaports of Civitavecchia and Genoa. From October 20, the new technology will be extended to all checkpoints in Italy.

The facility will operate in 29 European countries, including 25 of the 27 EU member states, as well as Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland. Cyprus and Ireland will not use the system, continuing to stamp passports manually.

After many delays since 2022, due to technical problems and hesitations from member states, the launch will be gradual, and each country will have until April 10, 2026 to implement the mechanism at all border points.

In Germany, the system will launch on October 12 at Düsseldorf Airport, then in Frankfurt and Munich, to be later extended to all German airports and ports.

The platform aims to strengthen border security and identify travellers who overstay the permitted period in the Schengen area (90 days within a 180-day period). All travellers from non-EU countries will have to scan their passports or travel documents whenever they cross an external border of the Union. This system will not apply to citizens or legal residents of the bloc, or to those with a long-stay visa.

The mechanism will record the name, biometric data, date and location of entry/exit of travelers. The data from the facial scan and fingerprints, collected during the first registration, will be stored for three years in the database. Within this period, travelers will only need a fingerprint or photo to compare it with the stored data. The system will replace the traditional stamping of passports with the digital registration of entry and exit.
