Turkish model for securing Albanian agriculture? - Deputy Minister, Guri: We are

Soon, the Ministry of Agriculture is expected to have an agricultural insurance scheme ready, which will offer more protection to farmers and agribusinesses. In an interview for SCAN TV, Deputy Minister of Agriculture, Fatmir Guri, announced that one of the options being considered is the Turkish agricultural insurance scheme, “Tarsim”.

"The climate change process is a process that cannot be denied today. And among the sectors that have the highest sensitivity, it is precisely the agricultural sector. It is our will that this process be systematized. So we build an instrument that will be by the side of farmers whenever they need it. Precisely for this reason we have started to do an analysis of what are the best systems of support for farmers through agricultural insurance that we have today in Europe or beyond. And the Turkish system, "Tarsim", is a system that has had significant success in terms of the number of applications it has made, that is, the number of policies sold, but also the level of compensation made. Precisely in this context, a group from the Ministry of Agriculture, which I led, went to see how this system really works and how suitable it is to be applied in Albania, of course taking into account the many characteristic elements of Albanian agriculture that we have, but also the fact of the objectives that we have for EU membership".

But is the Turkish scheme the most suitable version to apply in Albania?

"It is a system that is being analyzed. It is one of the systems that we are taking into consideration. The agricultural insurance process is a process that comes from the cooperation of at least three main actors. It is the government, the farmer, and the private insurance institutions. I believe that it is precisely this cooperation, the element on which we must work harder to make it possible because on this level of cooperation the entire agricultural insurance scheme will be built."

The scheme is intended to be accessible to both small and large farms, giving farmers more security in the face of unpredictable events that could cause significant damage to their production and income.
