Taormina Ministerial in Italy/ Hasani: "EU enlargement, strategic choice for peace"!
This year marks the 70th anniversary of the historic Messina and Taormina Conference, one of the most important events of the European journey, where essential steps were taken towards the further integration of the continent, culminating in the creation of the EU.
Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs, Igli Hasani, participated in the ministerial organized within the framework of this anniversary, where, together with counterparts from EU member and candidate countries, he discussed the trajectory of the EU, as well as the challenges and perspectives in a new geopolitical context.
In his speech, Minister Igli Hasani underlined that this date should not only be remembered, but should be revitalized with its ambition.
“I wish that this 70th anniversary is more than a commemoration. It should be a call to courage. It should remind us that the EU is not finished, it is still being formed. And that enlargement is not a burden, it is a promise. A promise for peace, for dignity, for a continent that refuses to be divided between centers and peripheries, between past and future members. That enlargement is not an administrative process, but a strategic choice for peace. And that Europe cannot be complete without the Western Balkans,” he said.
Focusing on Albania's journey towards the European family, Minister Hasani assessed that:
"For us, the path to Europe is not a matter of convenience. It is a national call, rooted in the belief that our country, by history, geography and values, is within the European family. We have made important steps forward, opening 4 group chapters for negotiations, while we expect to open the other two within the year. The objective is clear: closing the negotiations by 2027 and EU membership by the end of the decade."
He stated that Albania's journey is linked to that of our region, as our country continues to play a constructive role by promoting dialogue, supporting regional initiatives and standing firmly behind European values. “Albania's commitment to the EU is unwavering. But the EU's commitment to the Western Balkans must also be credible,” Hasani added.
The Messina and Taormina Conference in 1955 became the cornerstone for the creation of the Treaties of Rome and later the European Union itself. On this 70th anniversary, this conference represents a key moment to assess the past and build a common European future.
