Vlora Bay with wastewater treatment plant - In operation within the year,

Wastewater in the Orikum area will no longer be discharged into the sea, as one of the projects aimed at protecting the Bay of Vlora is nearing completion.

"The Orikum Wastewater Treatment Plant will be the 13th plant in Albania, which is expected to be put into operation within this year."

"At this stage, approximately 80-90% of the work has been done. We will soon have to start the testing part, which means regular testing of electromechanical equipment. Some of it has already started," says Lorenc Verçani, project manager.

The investment is part of the "Water Supply for Rural Areas IV" Program, which assists Albania's EU accession process by improving water supply and wastewater management in the Albanian Riviera. It has a total value of 46 million euros, of which 40 million euros are loans provided by the German KfW, while the rest are grants.

The investment in Orikum amounts to 5.5 million euros, while in addition to the plant, the project also includes the expansion of the sewage network with 24 km of new network, as well as the construction of 2 new pumping stations and the rehabilitation of 4 existing stations.

"At its peak, it is designed for approximately 50-53 thousand people or the population that it will have to cover. It is a very important project in fact for the Orikum area, the city in particular, but also the Tragjas, Radhima and Dukat areas of course," says Verçani.

Wastewater treatment will be carried out through 3 processes, while the treated water will be discharged through a 650-meter marine pipe into the Bay of Vlora.

"The initial part where the structure performs the physical-mechanical treatment of the flow that comes to the plant, then it is passed to the aeration tanks that we technically call them, which constitute the biological process of water treatment and then normally there are a series of cyclical processes that bring and carry the water towards the structures and the water treatment is carried out. Part of it is used again in the plant for sanitary water, while the rest is released through the delivery line as treated water", - explains the project manager.

Currently, the area has an existing wastewater network built in the 1960s, with only 30% of residents connected to the sewerage network, while 70% used septic tanks.

The completion of the project is expected to have an impact on public health, environmental protection, as it protects sensitive ecosystems such as the Pasha Liman Lagoon, the Karaburun-Sazan National Park and the Narta Lagoon, as well as on tourism and the economy, as it improves the image of Orikum as a sustainable and clean destination.
