600 euros per month for newborns - Sardinia's strategy to combat

Families living in small municipalities in Sardinia will receive a monthly contribution in 2025 for each newborn, adopted or sheltered child. This is provided for by a resolution approved by the Regional Council that simplifies the procedures. The beneficiaries of the initiative are families who already reside or who seek to relocate in municipalities with fewer than 5,000 inhabitants, contributing to the repopulation of the island's interior.

The legislation confirms the provision of 600 euros per month for the first born, adopted or foster child, up to the age of five. For each subsequent child, the contribution is equal to 400 euros per month. The resources will be transferred directly to the municipalities in two annual installments. Thus, each municipal administration will be able to plan interventions efficiently and quickly.

The economic support for births is part of the aim to address the demographic problem. According to 2023 data, Sardinia recorded the lowest birth rate in Italy, equal to 4.9 births per thousand inhabitants, against a national average of 6.7. For this reason, the measure aims to reverse a trend that is not only related to demography, but also to the economic and social dimension of the territories.

According to the regional health advisor, the plan against depopulation is not limited to an economic transfer. The region has provided evaluation indicators that will take into account the residential stability of the beneficiary families, their employment, level of education and income. The aim is for the contribution to be more than a welfare measure in itself, but to develop a territorial logic.

In addition to incentives for newborns, the Regional Council has introduced policies to support the elderly, which are considered essential to avoid the abandonment of territories. Services and programs will be offered to encourage the elderly to stay in their homes, with the aim of keeping family and social networks alive in smaller towns.

The Sardinian region has approved a €40 million fund for the 2025 program. The success of the decision will be assessed in the long term, with continuous monitoring of the resident population and economic and social changes. The data will be analyzed taking into account the growth of local services, the birth of new businesses, job creation and demographic stability.
