Over 20 thousand new businesses opened in 2025/ Tirana leads Albania, retail sales lead
The year 2025 has marked a boom in new business initiatives. New business registrations increased significantly last year with 20,765 new entities, up from 17,500 in 2024 and 16,853 in 2023.
Referring to official data from the National Business Center, the geographical distribution shows that Tirana continues to hold the main weight with 11,175 new businesses, followed by Durrës with 2,185 entities, Vlora with 1,913, Fier 1,173 businesses, Elbasan 873 and Shkodra 849, while significant registrations were also recorded in Lezhë, Korçë, Berat, Gjirokastër, Dibër and Kukës.
Regarding economic activities, the highest number of registrations belongs to wholesale and retail trade, including repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles (5,341), followed by accommodation and food service activities (2,878), construction (1,663), professional, scientific and technical activities (1,645), information and communication (1,547), administrative and support services (1,515) and transport and storage (1,433).
In the field of permits and licenses, 2,000 new licenses were issued during 2025, mainly for medical and dental services, food production and trade, pharmacies, vehicle-related activities, tour operators and wholesale of food of animal origin. 249 new permits were also issued, with type B environmental permits, permits for fishing and exploitation of aquatic fauna and mining permits standing out. Compared to previous years, this indicator also marks a steady increase.
An important element of 2025 is the inclusion of women in entrepreneurship, where 6,596 entities are led by women.
During 2025, the National Business Center has administered a total of 177,307 applications, of which 154,436 in the Commercial Register, 13,025 in the Register of Permits, Licenses and Authorizations and 9,846 in the Register of Beneficial Owners. Compared to previous years, the total volume of applications remains at stable levels, while an increase in applications in the Register of Beneficial Owners and in the field of licenses is noted.
The most used services by businesses during 2025 are mainly related to the Commercial Register, where the submission of the annual balance sheet, changes for limited liability companies and for natural persons, registration of natural persons and suspension of activity are the most frequent. In the Register of Permits, Licenses and Authorizations, the most frequent requests have been new applications, changes, voluntary revocations and extensions of the deadline, while in the Register of Beneficial Owners, applications for initial registration and for data changes dominate.
