Over 1,700 businesses protect their trademarks - Awareness grows, more

Over 1,700 businesses have been provided with a trademark registration certificate, in order to prevent imitations and abuses at the expense of the investment they have made.

Official data from the General Directorate of Industrial Property show that during 2025, this institution issued 1705 registration certificates, in 2024, 1020 registration certificates were issued, in 202, 1087 registration certificates and in 2022, 963 registration certificates for trademarks were issued.

The increase compared to the previous year is approximately 67.2%, and it is the highest figure in years.

Data from this institution shows that there is a significant increase in the interest and awareness of businesses to guarantee their name in a market where it is common for fake products to be traded under different brand names, to the detriment of Albanian consumers.

There is also an increase in trademark renewal applications, reaching 765 applications, up from 535 in 2022. The figures show an increase of approximately 34% in applications for renewal of registered trademarks for an additional period of 10 years.

The trademark may be renewed indefinitely for ten-year periods, after the owner files a request for this purpose with the DPPI and pays the relevant fee.

Meanwhile, international applications for trademark registration have an even higher figure, although decreasing compared to the previous year. During 2025, there were a total of 2344 international applications for the extension of protection for the Republic of Albania, while for 2024 there were 2677 applications. For 2023, a total of 2954 applications resulted, for 2022 there were 2017 applications for trademark registration from the Madrid Agreement.

Finally, to resolve all trademark issues and align the law with the European Union, the government has adopted a new law which aims, among other things, to provide higher protection for businesses and consumers.

The law provides for the right of trademark owners who are affected by infringing actions to file lawsuits, present and provide evidence, request interim measures to prevent an infringement, and to remove from circulation, confiscate and place under control goods that are suspected of infringing previously registered trademarks. The law also addresses the compensation of damages suffered by owners of previous trademarks from infringements and attempts by infringers to abuse the trademarks of other owners without authorization.
