The price of oil has decreased by 5 lekë in the retail fuel markets, a day after the change in prices on international exchanges. According to a TV SCAN survey in some points in the capital on March 12, oil is traded at 193 lekë per liter, down from 198 lekë/per liter in recent days. However, this level is significantly higher than the price at which oil was traded before the start of the conflict in the Middle East, when a liter was purchased for 175 lekë or 18 lekë less than currently.

Meanwhile, the government has stated that it is monitoring the fuel market to avoid abuses. For this purpose, a joint Task Force has been established between the General Directorate of Taxes and the Customs Directorate to monitor the fuel market so that there are no abuses with prices for Albanian citizens. The Task Force focuses on increasing tax and customs control and efficiency in the hydrocarbon sector, both in wholesale and retail trade. A similar monitoring has also been announced by the Competition Authority, which focuses on prohibited agreements between companies to increase prices in a block.

Meanwhile, the Minister of Economy and Innovation Delina Ibrahimaj did not rule out the possibility of reducing oil taxes, and more specifically excise taxes, to reduce the final price. While speaking about the situation created in the fuel market as a result of the Middle East crisis, she said that currently attention is focused on monitoring abuses by fuel wholesale and retail companies, but depending on the progress of the crisis, further measures may be taken. Currently, Albanian citizens pay about 80 lek in taxes, while a 20% Value Added Tax is added to this price.
