Works to protect the Milot Bridge are completed - Safer traffic for road users

On the Milot highway-railway bridge, 788 meters long, interventions for the protection and stabilization of damaged piers on the axis of the old road have been completed. The works include cleaning and arranging the area around 32 piers, leveling the riverbed, concreting the foundations at a height of 1.5–2.5 m, as well as their reinforcement with a protective carpet of interconnected gabion blocks, according to the technical project.

The Director of the Albanian Road Authority, Ami Kozeli, inspected the situation on the ground. The interventions carried out increase the safety and durability of the bridge, guaranteeing safer traffic for road users and better protection of the infrastructure in this important segment. According to forecasts, these measures will extend the lifespan of the bridge for at least 5 to 10 years.

The start of traffic on this segment is expected within a few days, which will ease traffic towards the north of the country and especially the tourist areas in Lezha and Shkodra.

In July of last year, the Albanian Road Authority, in collaboration with the Polytechnic University of Tirana, made the decision to completely close the Milot road-rail bridge, after a detailed technical inspection that identified serious problems in durability and safety.

"The Milot road-rail bridge, with a length of 788 meters, posed a serious risk to the stability and safety of the crossing, as a result of significant damage to the supporting foundations, pronounced erosion in the base, due to the uncontrolled exploitation of river gravel and erosion throughout the riverbed.

Since its closure, alternative roads such as the main Lezhë-Milot and the National Road are currently being used for vehicle traffic. Meanwhile, the construction of a completely new bridge is foreseen by the ARA as part of the “100 Bridges” program, which is being implemented with the support of the World Bank.
