"Air pollution, beyond the norms" - Alternative report, Bejko: 98.3%

The alternative monitoring of air quality, noise pollution and water quality carried out during 2025 highlights worrying data regarding the state of the environment. According to the report carried out by CoPlan, the Institute for Habitat Development, 66.7% of the monitoring points in Tirana exceed the reference value for nitrogen dioxide (NO₂), while 98.3% of the monitoring points result above the reference level for carbon dioxide (CO₂).

"66.7% of monitoring points in Tirana throughout the year exceed the reference value for nitrogen dioxide, indicating a strong impact of road traffic and combustion sources in urban areas. At the same time, also in Tirana, 98.3% of monitoring points result above the reference level for carbon dioxide, which reflects the high intensity of urban activity and traffic in our cities", said Anila Bejko, executive director of CoPlan, during the presentation of the report.

The Swedish Ambassador to Albania emphasized the need to guarantee clean air and the financial and health consequences if pollution is not addressed.

“Within the environmental chapter of the EU integration process, the area that has the greatest impact on people’s daily well-being is air quality. Clean air is essential for public health, productivity and sustainable development. When air pollution is left untreated, the costs, both for the health system and for economic competitiveness, are considerable. And since pollution needs to be addressed at source, especially in the transport and heating sectors, this requires large long-term investments. Improving air quality is therefore both an environmental and socio-economic priority ,” said Niklas Ström, Ambassador of Sweden to Albania.

Also present at the event was Deputy Minister of Environment Genti Gazheli, who announced that work has begun on drafting the Air Quality Strategy and Action Plan 2026-2036, while in terms of monitoring points, the aim is to add 10 new stations. The publication of the alternative report comes at a time when the air quality monitoring system, which is administered by the National Environment Agency, presents numerous problems, especially in terms of the number of stations in the field, as well as real-time reporting by companies that are considered major polluters.
