Canada-Albania air link - Canadian Minister: Operations can begin immediately

Canada has signed an air transport agreement with Albania. The announcement was made by the Minister of Transport and the Prime Minister in the House of Commons of Canada. Just a few days ago, the Albanian government approved the agreement in principle. According to Transport Canada, negotiating new air transport agreements with various countries further improves the country's air connections with the rest of the world, which promotes trade diversification, strengthens supply chains, boosts tourism and helps boost economic growth.
The agreement calls for several airlines to operate scheduled flights between Canada and Albania. This will result in up to 14 passenger flights per week to each country, as well as up to 10 cargo flights per week. The airlines can begin providing services under the agreement immediately.
In a statement to the media, Steven MacKinnon, Minister of Transport and Leader of the Government in the House of Commons, said that this new air transport agreement with the Republic of Albania, one of Europe's fastest growing economies, will open up new economic opportunities for both our countries. The agreement will also strengthen our people-to-people and global connections to Canada.
Meanwhile, Minister of International Trade, Maninder Sidhu, said that the agreement marks an important moment in strengthening bilateral relations. This agreement will improve air connectivity, create new opportunities for tourism and foster closer people-to-people ties, furthering Canada's goals for trade diversification. For Canada, it will help our businesses access a growing market in Southeastern Europe and support our exporters as they reach new customers abroad. This partnership reflects our ongoing commitment to expanding international trade and building strong and mutually beneficial relationships around the world.
Canadian goods exports to Albania reached $85 million in 2024. Albania is the leading destination for Canadian goods exports among non-EU Balkan countries. Canada has air transport agreements or arrangements covering more than 125 countries.
Canada anticipates that this air transport agreement will facilitate Albania's first direct transatlantic flight.
