With the opening of negotiations for the second chapter of the EU acquis, Albania takes a step closer towards membership in the European Union.
The Internal Market chapter brings to 3 the number of chapters opened so far for Albania, while there are still 3 other chapters where negotiations for the approximation of legislation need to be opened.
The second chapter group contains a total of 9 chapters, while the harmonization of legislation will enable Albania to move closer to European standards in areas such as consumer protection and public health.
According to expert Lorela Alia, this chapter group will be a separate challenge for Albania, because the larger number of chapter groups will increase the difficulty of approximating legislation.
In October of last year, the second intergovernmental conference was held to open the first group chapter "Fundamentals", which is more related to the rule of law and the rule of law.
Meanwhile, within just 2 months, in December 2024, negotiations for the sixth chapter group on foreign relations would open.
