Women live longer, but in poorer health - WHO: More years with chronic disease

Women's health beyond their reproductive years is receiving increasing attention in European health policies and analyses. A World Health Organization analysis for the European region shows that women spend more years with chronic diseases and disabilities, while in some cases their health problems are diagnosed later or documented less accurately.

Data for Albania also show a high burden of chronic diseases among women. According to INSTAT, in 2025, circulatory system diseases were the leading cause of death for both sexes, but their burden was higher among women. They accounted for 54.5% of all deaths among women, compared to 51.6% among men. In total, circulatory diseases caused about 53% of deaths in the country.

Another element that coincides with the concern raised by the WHO is related to the way in which causes of death are recorded. In Albania, 20.9% of deaths during 2025 were classified in the group “symptoms, signs and ill-defined diseases”. Within this group, 72.9% are related to old age, while INSTAT highlights that deaths recorded for this cause are more frequent in women than in men.

At the European level, the WHO raises the same concern. In women over 45, the cause of death is about 14% more likely than in men to be recorded in unspecified categories, such as heart failure, cardiac arrest, frailty, unspecified dementia or unknown cause.

According to the World Health Organization, part of this difference is related to the fact that women live longer and may suffer from several diseases at an advanced age. But the analysis also highlights delayed diagnoses, fewer examinations and lower representation of women in clinical research, especially for cardiovascular diseases.

WHO calls for women's health care not to focus only on pregnancy and the reproductive years, but to extend throughout life, with more attention to early diagnosis and chronic diseases.
