ICT sector needs AI specialists - RCC report: New developments are changing labor market needs
Information and Communication Technology is increasingly becoming one of the sectors with potential for the Albanian economy. Exports of technology services have expanded significantly in recent years, while Albanian companies are increasingly connecting with international markets and clients.
According to a report by the Regional Cooperation Council (RCC), the sector experienced a strong acceleration across the region after 2018. In Albania, ICT services exports almost tripled by 2024, while growth was also favored by remote working, the digitalization of businesses and the demand for technological services from abroad.
Today, Albania has over 4,000 active employers in the ICT sector and nearly 23,000 professionals. More than half of the companies in this sector export their services, making technology an activity increasingly linked to the international market.
But the development of the sector is also accompanied by several challenges.
82% of ICT activity is concentrated in Tirana, indicating that the development of this sector remains highly centralized. Also, most professionals have medium to advanced experience, while companies face difficulties in finding the employees they need. The report highlights that Albania is the most geographically concentrated market in the region and the most dependent on mid-career professionals.
Another challenge is related to artificial intelligence. The demand for professionals who know how to work with AI and integrate it into business is growing. But the challenge is not simply about using artificial intelligence tools.
What is increasingly required is the ability to build AI-based products and solutions, combining technological knowledge with an understanding of business needs.
So, after years of rapid growth, the Albanian ICT sector seems to be entering a new phase. The challenge is no longer just to increase the number of programmers, but to create professionals with deeper, more specialized skills and adapted to new technologies.
