"Emergency" energy supply - ERE opens the competition for the Supplier

The Energy Regulatory Authority has officially opened the procedure for the selection of the Supplier of Last Resort, known as FMF, an essential service for guaranteeing electricity supply to consumers who are left without an active supplier in the free market.

According to the ERE announcement, the process aims to ensure competition and transparency in the selection of the operator that will be responsible for emergency supply, guaranteeing the continuity of electricity for businesses and consumers who temporarily remain outside free market contracts.

The Supplier of Last Resort is a protection mechanism within the energy market: it is activated only when customers lose their supplier, avoiding power outages and providing a transitional period until a new contract is concluded. Currently, this function is performed by the Universal Service Provider, part of the OSHEE Group.

ERE has invited all licensed entities to submit their offers according to the technical and financial requirements set out in the procedure documentation.

According to the Entit, the selection of FMF is of particular importance for market stability and consumer protection, especially in the context of further liberalization of the energy sector. This, taking into account that around 2300 businesses connected to the 6 kV voltage will enter the free market from January 1, 2026. For these consumers, energy will no longer be at a price regulated by OSHEE, but through open contracts with suppliers offering different conditions.
