"500% Tariffs on Countries Trading with Russia" - Trump Warns of New Measures to End the War in Ukraine

A bill proposed in the US Senate could impose a 500% tariff on countries that continue to trade with Moscow, including major buyers such as India and China. The proposal comes as Washington seeks new sanctions to isolate Russia's economy.
President Donald Trump said Republicans were drafting the legal framework for other measures and added: "I agree with this bill. Any country that does business with Russia will be sanctioned very severely. We can also add Iran to this formula."
In an effort to hit Russian energy revenues, the legislation, called the Russia Sanctions Act of 2025, would impose tariffs of up to 500% on imports from countries that buy uranium or petroleum products from Moscow and that do not actively support Ukraine. A similar tariff could also be applied to goods or services that come directly from Russia.
"The ultimate means to end this war will be tariffs on countries like China, India, and Brazil, which keep Putin's war machine running by buying Russian oil and gas at cheap prices," the US senators said.
The bill would take effect if the US President determines that Russia is refusing to negotiate a peace agreement with Ukraine, violating an existing agreement, or taking other aggressive actions toward Kiev.
Until now, Trump has been reluctant to support the legislation as Washington has been trying to organize peace talks between Ukraine and Russia, including the Alaska meeting and consideration of a possible summit in Budapest. However, negotiations have remained deadlocked.
Nearly four years after the conflict began, the Kremlin shows no signs of backing down, even after a new wave of sanctions from the US and EU in October of this year.
