Clean energy, interest in Guarantee of Origin increases - Four companies apply

Within a few weeks, four companies have applied to the Energy Regulatory Authority to be equipped with a Guarantee of Origin Certificate. These are Ener Trade, Nova Solar, Devolli HydropoWer and Noa Energy Trade, signaling an increase in interest in this instrument in the domestic energy market. This development comes at a time when the Guarantee of Origin Register, although active for several years, results in very limited use.

Meanwhile, the increase in demand is also linked to developments in the European market, where companies are facing increasingly strong demands for transparency on the source of energy and carbon footprint. Although the Guarantee of Origin does not constitute a direct obligation under the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism, adopted by the European Union, it is being widely used as a tool to document the use of renewable energy and to prepare for new climate and reporting standards.

The Guarantee of Origin is an electronic document that proves that part or all of the energy consumed by an entity was produced from renewable sources, such as wind, solar, hydropower or biomass. Any entity, natural or legal, can apply for registration in this system, categorising itself as a producer, supplier, trader, renewable energy operator, guarantee trader or end customer.

Purchasing Guarantee of Origin certificates is the only way to reliably document renewable energy consumption in Europe. A Guarantee of Origin brings benefits to companies, providing proven and verifiable emission reductions. They are an efficient, recognised and legally supported means of documenting and formalising a commitment to sustainable electricity.
