"Wind energy will surpass hydropower plants" - WB Report for Albania: Decarbonization of the sector is feasible

From Ola Mitre

"Wind energy will surpass hydropower plants" - WB Report for Albania:

"Accelerating the energy transition to achieve net zero emissions across the entire economy in Albania by 2050 is feasible, but will require radical transformation and determined steps," according to the World Bank Group's Climate and Development Report. for Albania, published a few days ago.

According to the analysis carried out for the assessment of scenarios for the decarbonisation of the electricity sector, in the reference scenario without a net-zero target, emissions up to 2050 would increase, with more reliance on natural gas, solar and wind energy, due of their competitive cost.

Meanwhile, with a net-zero ambition for Albania, hydropower, solar, wind and biomass energy would constitute the main sources of electricity in Albania and there would no longer be any role for natural gas in a longer-term framework.

According to the report, wind will overtake hydropower as the main source of electricity thanks to the huge potential on the ground.

"This diversification of electricity production, which is currently highly dependent on hydropower plants, would improve the flexibility and resilience of the current system. The Vlora thermal power plant would remain productive in the medium term, but its operation after 2030 would become unprofitable", the report states, among other things, adding that the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 would require also significant energy efficiency improvements and electrification across the economy, particularly in the transport and heating sectors.
