Decree on migrant centers in Albania - Italy considers the possibility of a new law to implement the agreement
The Italian government is determined not to suspend the agreement with Tirana on migrant centers and is considering restarting it through a new decree.
Minister for European Affairs Tommaso Foti spoke about this possibility in an interview: “We will assess whether to intervene before the decision of the European Court of Justice, which could arrive no earlier than March.”
Meanwhile, this move has sparked a revolt from the opposition. "The insistence is diabolical, the government must stop this institutional madness that is creating a major clash between powers and a waste of resources," Democratic Party spokespeople announced.
But Giorgia Meloni's party has no intention of taking a step back. "We are moving forward with the centers in Albania. The agreement, after all, is a model that is setting an example in Europe with member states, which are maintaining the Italian position, starting with the EU president, Ursula von der Leyen," official sources say.
However, the initiative does not seem likely to be discussed soon at a meeting of the Council of Ministers. The idea has been on the table for several days: a specific provision is intended to prevent the transfer of magistrates from the “immigration sections” to the Courts of Appeal, the same judges who have so far always rejected requests for the evaluation of shelter centers in Albania. If this were the case, the provision could become the new battleground between the majority and the opposition.
