New map for Albanian wines - Cultivation areas are defined. Albania with European standards
The Vlora Agricultural Technology Transfer Center has opened a tender with the object of a study to determine wine grape production areas.
According to the document, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development considers the Albanian viticulture and wine production sector as a sector with great development opportunities for agribusiness, employment and improving living standards in rural areas.
Meanwhile, the main goal of the study is to create a map of homogeneous vineyard areas throughout the Albanian territory, which will serve as a basis for producers to be included in the quality schemes that are active in the European Union. The current situation of Albanian wines, without wines with designations such as protected geographical indications or protected designation of origin, is disadvantageous compared to EU wines.
Knowledge of quality schemes is important for the Albanian wine sector, because a significant portion of EU wines are in these quality schemes, which have a positive impact on wine consumers' choices and guide their choices.
According to the EU, these products represent a strong point and an important competitive advantage for producer groups and are an integral part of the countries' cultural and gastronomic heritage.
Referring to the document, in order to build an important basis for the protection of quality Albanian wines through quality schemes, it is important to define the climatic zones for the cultivation of vineyards in the territory of Albania according to the European classification, also to identify homogeneous areas of vineyard cultivation and especially to identify those that are considered autochthonous varieties. The study is very important for the orientation of new plantings in Albania, in accordance with the trend of a specific area.
The recognition of quality schemes is important for the Albanian wine sector in the context of the integration of the domestic market into the European one, as well as the future prospects of full integration. Meanwhile, the estimated limit fund of this project is 20 million and 833 thousand lekë.
