Albin Kurti wins elections in Kosovo - But the result "imposes" the formation of a governing coalition
The Vetëvendosje Movement, led by Albin Kurti, came first in Sunday's parliamentary elections in Kosovo, but will likely have to negotiate a coalition with other parties to form the next government in the four-year mandate.
According to the Central Election Commission, which counted about 90% of the votes, the Vetëvendosje Movement with prime ministerial candidate Albin Kurti won 41.13 percent of the votes, followed by the Democratic Party with 22.04 percent, the Democratic League with 17.67 percent and the coalition gathered around the Alliance for the Future of Kosovo with 7.64 percent. The Serb List won 4 percent, which means the majority of the votes of the Serb community in the competition with five other political entities.
The final results of the vote will determine the new composition of the 120-seat Assembly. Minority communities are guaranteed 20 seats in the Kosovo Parliament. Ten of them are for the Serb community.
Based on these results, according to him, the Vetëvendosje Movement, although the winner of the elections, will not be able to govern alone, as in the previous mandate.
"If the Vetevendosje Movement decides to form a government with only minorities, then this will be an extremely unstable government, as it will have difficulty reaching 61 votes. There may also be problems with the Serbian List," political analysts emphasize.
The Vetevendosje Movement has ruled out the possibility of a post-election coalition with the previous opposition parties during the election campaign. A coalition with the Vetevendosje Movement has also been ruled out by two other parties, the Democratic League of Kosovo and the Alliance for the Future of Kosovo.
Meanwhile, the Democratic Party of Kosovo, which according to preliminary results is ranked second, has not ruled out the possibility of a coalition after the elections.
