Businesses will finance waste collection and recycling - Extended Producer Responsibility, a condition for EU membership

The Ministry of Environment has 4 draft decisions ready, which will pave the way for the implementation of the law "On Extended Producer Responsibility", charging every manufacturing entity that develops, produces, processes, treats, sells or imports products that generate waste after use, with the obligation to manage them. Everything was announced during a meeting on the circular economy, held at Europe House, after the opening of Chapter 4 of the EU accession negotiations.
Ramaj also spoke about the costs that businesses will incur in implementing new legal obligations.
Andrea Ferrero, from the European Union delegation, spoke about the importance of fulfilling obligations, within the framework of Chapter 27 "Environment and Climate Change" for the integration of our country into the EU, seeing the circular economy as a development opportunity.
The Law "On Extended Producer Responsibility" enters into force on December 1 of this year and will apply to specific waste streams, which are: packaging and its waste, batteries and accumulators, end-of-life vehicles, and waste electrical and electronic equipment.
Meanwhile, the main obligations of the producer are related to the financing and creation of a system for the collection, transportation, recycling or other way of treating the waste generated by their products that they place on the market in Albania. Also, the obligation will be investments in the collection infrastructure or the development of appropriate information, awareness, guidance or training activities to inform citizens in the exercise of their rights as consumers.
