EU, 1.5 million euros for protection from fires and floods - Investments in 5 municipalities, drones, boats and special engines

Albania is increasingly affected by natural disasters such as fires and floods, causing attention to take preventive measures to increase significantly.
For this reason, within the framework of the SA Resilience project, funded by the European Union through the Interreg IPA South Adriatic 2021–2027 program, the National Civil Protection Agency (AKMC) is implementing a series of strategic interventions aimed at strengthening capacities for the prevention and management of fires and floods in the country.
Through an investment of 1.5 million euros allocated directly to this institution from this project, the National Civil Protection Agency (AKMC) is supporting 5 municipalities affected every year by fires and floods, such as Malësi e Madhe, Pukë, Divjakë, Rrogozhinë and Kavajë.
In the current phase, coordination meetings have been held with local authorities to assess emergency situations and improve early prevention mechanisms.
"The most frequent phenomena are floods and fires. Not everything is predictable, but that does not mean that we should not take measures in those areas where the risk is historically low. Coordination of institutions is a challenge in itself."
During the meeting held regarding the advancement of the project, representatives of central and local institutions shared experiences and data on fire and flood cases for the year 2025, underlining the need for technological investments and specialized training.
Next year, the project foresees concrete investments in modern equipment, including drones for detecting and extinguishing fires from the air; boats for intervention in cases of flooding; professional clothing for diving and firefighting; Qou-bikes (special motorcycles) for intervention in remote mountainous areas.
In parallel with the infrastructure investments, the project has an important social and educational component. Awareness campaigns have been conducted in 4 schools in the beneficiary municipalities, with the aim of educating children on the correct response in cases of emergencies, contributing to building a long-term safety culture.
