Retail sales volume increases/Hydrocarbons and non-food items drive annual growth by 6%

Sales in Albania’s stores and markets have been growing at a steady pace this year, although the expansion appears to have slowed slightly. The retail trade index reached 136.7 points in the second quarter, marking a 6% increase compared to last year and 1.4% compared to the previous quarter. A year ago, retail trade grew by 6.4%. However, the data shows that the trade sector is doing well and people are buying more, also influenced by tourism.
During this period, seasonally adjusted data show that in the group “Retail trade, excluding retail trade of hydrocarbons in specialized stores”, sales volume increased by 1.3% compared to the previous quarter. This increase reflects a stable demand for non-energy products and daily consumer goods.
On the other hand, a more significant increase was observed in the group “Retail trade of hydrocarbons in specialized commercial units”, where the seasonally adjusted sales volume increased by 3.4% compared to the previous quarter. This development is mainly related to the increase in fuel consumption and the greater economic movement during this period.
Regarding the impact of the groups on the annual change of +6% in the third quarter of 2025 compared to the same period of 2024, the contributions are distributed across several main sectors. The group “Non-food items in specialized and non-specialized trade units” contributed with +1.8 percentage points, while the group “Food, beverages and tobacco in specialized and non-specialized trade units” also contributed with +1.8 percentage points. Meanwhile, the group “Retail trade of hydrocarbons in specialized trade units” had the greatest impact, with +2.4 percentage points.
