Trump sues BBC - Seeks $10 billion in damages over 'controversial' documentary

US President Donald Trump has sued the BBC in Miami federal court for defamation, seeking $10 billion in damages.
The civil lawsuit accuses the British Broadcasting Corporation of producing a "false, defamatory, misleading, derogatory and malicious" portrait of President Trump in a documentary that aired a week before the 2024 election.
According to the lawsuit, the documentary, titled "Trump: A Second Chance," was altered to make it appear as if during a speech on January 6, 2021, outside the White House, Trump had urged his supporters to attack the US Capitol, which he had not said.
The documentary falsely portrayed President Trump as telling supporters: 'We're going to the Capitol and I'll be there with you. And we're going to fight.'" Trump has since denied saying that. According to the lawsuit, the phrase "And we're going to fight" was uttered by Trump about 55 minutes after the statement "I'll be there with you."
BBC chairman Samir Shah recently apologized for what he called an “error of judgment” over the editing, while the director general and head of news resigned. The BBC apologized to Trump on November 13 and promised that the documentary would no longer be broadcast on its platforms.
In a statement, the BBC said: "While the BBC sincerely apologises for the way the clip was edited, we do not agree that the premises for a defamation claim exist."
A spokesman for Trump's legal team said: "The BBC, once respected and now discredited, defamed President Trump by intentionally and maliciously editing his speech, in a brazen attempt to interfere in the 2024 Presidential Election."
The American leader also declared: "You will soon see that I will sue the BBC, because they put words in my mouth that I did not say."
