Not only a host, but Albania is also a capital exporter - BoA: From 2021, a fivefold increase in direct investments of our businesses abroad

Not only foreigners are investing in Albania, but also Albanians abroad. Over the last 5 years, Albanian businesses have significantly expanded their investments outside Albania's borders. The latest data from the Central Bank shows that in just 9 months, the total Albanian holdings in the form of direct investments abroad have exceeded by 12 million euros what they were in 2024, reaching 231 million euros in 2025.
Since 2021, where total investments were only 43 million euros, this figure has reached a record value of 238 million euros in 2023. Last year marked a decline of 8%, while 2025 is expected to mark a new record.
Foreigners are bringing in a lot of money, but we are also investing significant amounts abroad.
These investments mainly include opening subsidiaries, acquiring companies, reinvesting profits and lending within groups in sectors such as trade, construction, energy, services and technology. In essence, they reflect a new phase of Albanian business development, which is no longer limited to the domestic market, but is seeking to position itself in the region and beyond.
On the other hand, the increase in Albanian investments abroad does not diminish the importance of foreign direct investments in Albania, but creates a more balanced dynamic of capital flows. Albania continues to be a recipient of foreign funds, but is increasingly emerging as an exporter of capital.
From 2021 to 2025, there was a fivefold increase in direct investments by Albanians abroad, and if this trend continues, an increasingly active role of Albanian businesses in international markets is expected.
