Bank cash desks, with less flow of citizens - Banking applications and ATMs are

Have you ever been impressed by how long the queue is at the bank to perform transactions at the cash register? Most people seek services at that unit, rather than at other commercial bank units, such as the loan counter, opening bank accounts, applications or others. So, the cash register has the highest volume of transactions.

2025 has changed this “trend”. Over the past year, Albanian citizens and businesses have carried out fewer transactions at bank tellers than in 2024. According to the latest data from the Bank of Albania, transactions carried out through tellers have dropped to 7.1 million, about 4.7% less than in the previous year.

The value of transactions has also suffered the same. Official statistics show a 2.8% drop in the amount of money that has moved through the cash register, from 2.6 trillion to 2.5 trillion lekë.

Both deposits and cash withdrawals at the bank's physical counter have decreased, but withdrawals appear to have had a greater impact.

Initially, the decrease in cash deposits at the cash desk is due to a number of factors. Although we are not yet at the right levels, the use of home banking is still increasing day by day. More individuals and businesses are performing banking transactions via phone from the bank's application or online website, thus avoiding waiting in lines at the bank cash desk and saving time for their other commitments.

On the other hand, the addition of more ATMs that offer the possibility of depositing money, not just withdrawing, has affected both of these indicators. Many citizens have no reason to go to the bank to deposit money into their account when they can easily do so in a few seconds, anywhere and anytime from an ATM. This excludes cases where the individual needs to withdraw or deposit money in amounts much larger than the ATM allows.

Headline: Over-the-counter transactions have declined over the past year, indicating a gradual shift in the way citizens and businesses conduct banking. This is largely due to the increased use of online banking services and ATMs that also offer cash deposits.
