Persian Gulf, Iran resumes attacks on US allies - Trump says this was not expected, but he was warned

Iran launched new attacks on the United Arab Emirates on Tuesday, the kind of retaliatory strikes on U.S. allies in the Persian Gulf. President Trump said the attacks were unexpected, but sources said he had been warned before the conflict.
The US-Israeli war against Iran is in its third week with at least 2,000 dead and no end in sight. The critical Strait of Hormuz remains largely closed, with US allies rejecting Trump's request for help to reopen the critical waterway, driving up energy prices and fearing inflation.
Trump said earlier Monday that Iran's retaliatory attacks on its neighbors, including Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Kuwait, came as a surprise. "They (Iran) shouldn't have been attacking all these other countries in the Middle East," he said. "Nobody expected this. We were shocked."
Trump previously accused some Western allies of ingratitude after several countries rejected his request to send warships to escort oil tankers in the strait.
A number of US partners, including Germany, Spain, Italy, Japan and Australia, said they had no immediate plans to send ships to help reopen the strategic waterway, which Iran has effectively closed with drones and naval mines.
“We lack the mandate from the United Nations, the European Union or NATO required under the Basic Law,” German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said in Berlin, adding that Washington and Israel had not consulted Germany before launching the war. Trump had previously suggested that China, which relies on Iranian crude oil, should help open the strait and could delay a long-awaited trip to Beijing later this month if he does not receive support. On Monday, Trump said he was looking to postpone the visit by “a month or more.”
While US and Israeli firepower has decimated Iran's military, its fleet of cheap drones continues to wreak havoc in the region.
