Tourism Expansion Increases Dependence on the Sector/Brings Billions to the Economy, but Also Costs Locals

Tourism is playing an increasingly important role in the Albanian economy. According to an analysis published by data visualization platform Visual Capitalist, Albania ranks 16th in the world for its economic dependence on tourism, with around 21.9% of its Gross Domestic Product linked to this sector.
The analysis is based on data from international institutions such as the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UN Tourism), the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund (IMF), processed to measure the weight of tourism in the economies of countries.
The ranking shows that the economies most dependent on tourism are mostly small or island countries. At the top of the list are Macau, where tourism accounts for about 70.8% of the economy, Aruba with 69.7%, and the Maldives with 68.1%.
However, the fact that Albania appears on this list shows that tourism has become one of the most important sectors for the country's economy.
In recent years, Albania has experienced a strong increase in tourist arrivals, which has had a direct impact on the economy. The tourism sector encompasses a wide range of activities, from accommodation and transport to entertainment services, trade and cultural activities. This means that the impact of tourism on the economy is not limited to hotels and restaurants, but extends to many other sectors of economic activity.
What do official statistics show?
Data published by INSTAT show that the sector that includes trade, transport, accommodation and food services accounts for about 19% of Albania's Gross Domestic Product in 2024.
This figure is somewhat lower than the estimate published in the international analysis, because national statistics measure the economy according to specific economic sectors, while international estimates include the broader impact of tourist spending on the economy, i.e. they calculate the entire economic chain created by tourists.
The benefits and risks of tourism addiction
However, the rapid growth of tourism also brings economic consequences for local residents.
The increase in demand for tourist accommodation is often accompanied by an increase in rental and property prices, as many properties are sold to short-term rental markets for tourists. In tourist areas, this can make it more difficult for locals to find affordable housing.
In some cases, the prices of services and products also increase, as businesses increasingly target tourist consumers with higher purchasing power.
The challenge of an economy dependent on tourism
Albania's ranking among the most tourism-dependent economies demonstrates the importance this sector has taken on in the country's economic development. But a high dependence on tourism makes the economy more sensitive to international crises, changes in travel demand, or geopolitical developments.
