Albanians' bank accounts, almost half on their phones - "Loyal" to the queues at banks. Why only 47% are accessed via the internet?

Only 47% of bank accounts in Albania are also accessed via the internet from bank applications or websites. Despite the fact that many Albanians are performing banking transactions from their phones in the comfort of their homes or workplaces, the number of accounts that continue to be accessed only with the physical presence of the person in the bank continues to outweigh those that are controlled by phone.
In other words, about 53% of Albanians' bank accounts are not accessed online at all, which means that many citizens continue to refuse to give up the traditional way of conducting transactions and receiving other services from physical bank counters.
At the moment of opening an account, all banks suggest that the client download their application, which will offer the possibility of checking the account balance, viewing periodic payment orders, the status of debit and credit cards, consumer and home loans (i.e. the balances to be paid, payment dates, installment amounts), time deposit details or opening a new deposit, credit card payment or repayment of loan installments, transfers between personal accounts, transfers to any account, to any bank inside and outside Albania, payments of telephone bills, OSHEE and UKT.
Home banking allows for quick transactions anywhere and without wasting time. Figures show that a significant number of people do not take these benefits into account, are distrustful and unwilling to embrace the digitalization of banking services. However, from the 1.3 million that was the total number of accounts accessible online during 2024, this number is expected to have reached 1.9 million during 2025, about 44% more.
According to the latest data from the Bank of Albania, of the total number of accounts accessible online, 98% are held by Albanians and only 2% by foreign citizens. Meanwhile, of the accounts accessed by phone by Albanians, around 90% are by individuals and only 10% by businesses.
At a time when online banking is being promoted by many countries, with the aim of reducing the use of physical cash, it seems that a significant portion of citizens in Albania will continue to prefer physical contact with the bank for a while longer.
