Film Fest, “One Battle After Another” wins Oscar - Winner Warner Bros, in process of sale to Paramount Skydance

The comic thriller “One Battle After Another” won best picture at the Oscars, topping a run of six trophies handed out Sunday as Hollywood handed out its top film awards. The unusual tale of political resistance edged out the vampire story “Sinners.” “Let’s have a martini! This is pretty great,” director Paul Thomas Anderson said on stage after his Warner Bros. production “One Battle” was named the top prize winner. The film stars Leonardo DiCaprio as a revolutionary.
Anderson previously had 11 Oscar nominations in his career and no wins. In addition to best picture, he won best director and best screenplay. “I wrote this movie so my kids would apologize for the mess we left in this world,” Anderson said. Sean Penn, who plays a obsessed military officer in “One Battle,” won best supporting actor. It was the third Oscar for Penn, who, as he often does, has been absent from the film industry’s awards ceremony.
Irish actress Jessie Buckley won best actress for her portrayal of William Shakespeare's wife, Agnes Hathaway, in "Hamnet," a story about a couple coping with the death of their 11-year-old son. The lavish celebration, Hollywood's most extravagant gala, took place as the United States declared war on Iran. Security was tight in and around the ceremony after a federal warning of a potential Iranian threat to California.
The celebrations masked concerns in the film industry about where films are being shot, as studios seek tax breaks and lower costs to enable production. Warner Bros. itself, the night's biggest winner with 11 Oscars, is in the process of being sold to Paramount Skydance, a deal that would reduce the number of major film distributors. A media watchdog group, the Free Press, distributed a billboard in Hollywood over the weekend expressing opposition to the sale.
