"94 million euros in debts to businesses and citizens - 3-month period, today's increase in obligations for investments and lawsuits"
The year 2025 has begun with a significant increase in central and local government debts to businesses and citizens.
According to official data from the Ministry of Finance, the stock of arrears has reached a total of 9.4 billion lek or 94 million euros from 73 million euros in December 2024, recording an increase of about 21 million euros.
Of the total debt accumulated until March 2025, the central government accounts for 3.8 billion lek and the local government accounts for approximately 4.2 billion lek. What is noticeable is that the central government has increased its stock of liabilities by the end of 2024 by approximately 1.2 billion lek, while the local government has exceeded this by approximately 900 million lek in the first 3 months of the year.
As for the category of arrears, the largest share is occupied by those for public investments, given that throughout this year there have been a large number of construction sites opened to provide better services to citizens.
Specifically, investment obligations reach a value of around 2.8 billion lek, an item that has increased at both levels of government, central and local.
On the other hand, the stock of liabilities for court decisions for unfair dismissals or business complaints reaches 2.4 billion lek, up from 1.3 billion lek recorded in December 2024.
The "other" category accounts for approximately 1.3 billion lek of total liabilities.
The stock of arrears fluctuates continuously from one quarter to the next depending on open public works, but the government's commitment and the obligation of local governments is to follow a repayment trend until they are completely zeroed. The figure compared to previous years is significantly lower.
